Best Movies of all time

39230 duels later, The Dark Knight is still #1 in the Movies ranking, with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King close behind.

The Dark Knight edges out The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by 15 ELO points at 1375, but the sharpest divide in the top 5 sits between ranks 2 and 3. A 67-point gap separates The Return of the King from The Fellowship of the Ring, suggesting voters draw a clear line between Tolkien's finale and the opener. Interstellar trails The Fellowship of the Ring by just 2 points at 1291, making the battle for third place tight. The presence of three Lord of the Rings entries in the top 5 confirms the trilogy's grip on the community, while Gran Torino's 983 ELO at the bottom signals that Eastwood's later work struggles to compete with the heavyweights above.

The ranking draws on 39230 duels cast by 645 players across 22 contenders, last updated on 11 October 2026. Interstellar and The Two Towers both win 54% of their matchups, yet sit 17 points apart, proof that even narrow win rates can mask meaningful ELO distance. The data reflects a community that favors epic scale and moral weight: fantasy trilogies and Christopher Nolan's universe-bending blockbusters dominate, while quieter character studies like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest hold the lower ranks. How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
