Scariest Harry Potter villains

Lord Voldemort leads the Harry Potter ranking with 1494 ELO points over 403 duels, ahead of Bellatrix Lestrange and Nagini.

Bellatrix Lestrange holds second place with 1424 ELO points, but a significant 100-point gap separates her from Nagini in third. This difference underscores Voldemort's most devoted servant as a cut above the serpent horcrux. Fenrir Greyback and Dolores Umbridge round out the top 5, with Umbridge's placement proving that institutional cruelty can rival raw magical violence in the eyes of voters. At the bottom, Draco Malfoy sits at rank 14 with 1096 ELO points, followed by his mother Narcissa Malfoy at rank 15. Alecto Carrow occupies the final position at rank 16 with 979 ELO points, suggesting these characters inspire less dread than the Dark Lord's inner circle.

This ranking draws from 27475 duels judged by 635 voters across 16 contenders, last updated on 10 October 2026. The data reveals not just which characters frightened audiences most, but how the community weighs different forms of terror: Voldemort's existential threat versus Umbridge's bureaucratic sadism, Bellatrix's unhinged loyalty versus Greyback's bestial savagery. Cast your vote to shape which Harry Potter villain truly deserves the title of most terrifying.

How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
