Best movie sagas

24418 duels later, The Lord of the Rings is still #1 in the best movie saga of all time ranking, with Harry Potter close behind.

The Lord of the Rings sits at the top with 1482 ELO points, 43 points ahead of Harry Potter in second place. The trilogy's grip on the top spot reflects its enduring appeal among voters who have tested it against 41 other franchises. But the ranking's sharpest divide appears lower: 61 ELO points separate Pirates of the Caribbean from The Dark Knight between ranks 3 and 4, marking the clearest fault line in the podium race. Star Wars, a saga that defined modern blockbuster filmmaking, occupies fifth place with 1349 points, trailing The Dark Knight by just 5 points. At the other end, Star Trek closes the ranking at 979 ELO, while Jason Bourne and Rambo occupy the two spots above it. The bottom positions suggest that some legendary franchises struggle to win over a community that clearly favors fantasy epics and swashbuckling adventures over science fiction and action thrillers.

How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
