Best Makoto Shinkai Films

Your Name wins 68% of its duels and tops the Makoto Shinkai Films ranking ahead of Weathering with You.

Weathering with You follows in second with 1290 ELO points, while Suzume claims third at 1285 ELO. The sharpest drop appears between Suzume and 5 Centimeters per Second, with a 189-point gap separating the third and fourth positions. This divide underscores a clear preference for Shinkai's recent international blockbusters over his earlier, more introspective work. At the bottom of the ranking, The Place Promised in Our Early Days sits at 1087 ELO, suggesting the director's debut feature film struggles to compete with the polish and reach of his later productions.

The ranking reflects 371 duels cast by 40 players across 6 contenders, updated 12 October 2026. The tight race between Weathering with You and Suzume, separated by just 5 ELO points, shows how closely matched these two films remain in the eyes of voters. Meanwhile, Your Name continues to dominate with a decisive lead of 99 points over Weathering with You, affirming its status as the filmmaker's most beloved work. How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
