Saddest moments in The Rookie

78 ELO points separate Lucy Chen's kidnapping from Jackson West's death at the top of The Rookie's saddest moment ranking, after 483 duels.

Lucy Chen's kidnapping claims the top spot with 1447 ELO points, winning 67% of its 140 duels. Jackson West's death follows at 1369 points with an identical win rate across 152 duels, then Captain Zoe Andersen's death at 1280 points. The sharpest divide in the ranking sits between Angela Lopez's abduction at 1228 points and Aaron Thorsen's assault at 1132 points, a 96-point gap that marks the boundary between the series' most devastating traumas and its somewhat less wrenching heartbreaks. At the bottom, John Nolan's wrongful arrest registers 942 points with a 23% win rate over 115 duels, suggesting fans reserve their deepest sorrow for the show's fatal or near-fatal crises rather than its procedural injustices. James's "death" sits just above at 1002 points with a 26% win rate across 121 duels, reinforcing the pattern that temporary setbacks fail to match permanent losses in emotional weight.

This ranking draws from 483 duels between 7 contenders, voted on by 31 players and updated on 12 October 2026. How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
