Worst The Walking Dead villains

1800 duels later, The Governor is still #1 in The Walking Dead worst villain ranking, with Gareth at 1324 ELO points close behind.

The Governor claims the top spot with 1393 ELO points and a 67% win rate across 113 duels, while Gareth follows at 1324 points. Alpha holds third place at 1300 points, but the sharpest drop in the ranking appears just below: a 92-point gap separates her from Beta at fourth. That chasm signals a clear divide between the villains who left the deepest scars and those who failed to sustain their menace. At the bottom, Negan sits at rank 8 with 1084 points despite his iconic status, and Shane lands last at rank 9 with just 1012 points and a 30% win rate. The community has spoken: fear and cruelty alone do not guarantee a place at the top.

This ranking draws on 1800 duels submitted by 100 players, who weighed 9 contenders against each other in head-to-head votes. The results were updated on 11 October 2026. If you disagree with The Governor's dominance or think Shane deserves better than the bottom slot, cast your own votes and shift the balance. Every duel changes the order.

How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
