Best Final Fantasy games

4138 duels later, Final Fantasy VII holds the top spot in the Final Fantasy ranking with 1435 ELO points, keeping Final Fantasy IX at bay.

A 70-point ELO gap separates Final Fantasy VII from Final Fantasy IX, the largest divide in the top tier. Final Fantasy X secures third place with 1350 points, just 15 behind IX. The podium reflects the PlayStation era's dominance, with three consecutive releases claiming the top three positions. Final Fantasy VIII follows at rank 4 with 1314 points, while Final Fantasy XIII rounds out the top 5 at 1297 points. At the bottom, Final Fantasy XI languishes at rank 17 with 943 ELO points and a 28% win rate across 128 duels, suggesting the MMO entry struggles to win over voters accustomed to single-player experiences. The original Final Fantasy sits just above it at rank 16 with 1068 points, indicating nostalgia alone cannot carry a contender in this field.

How this ranking is computed

Every duel won lifts a contender and every loss drops them, by an amount that depends on the opponent's strength: beating the leader is worth more than beating the last. It is an ELO, the same principle as in chess. Duels are not drawn at random — an adaptive entropy sort puts the least predictable match-ups first, which settles the ranking far faster than a full round robin. A worldwide ranking is only published past 30 completed plays. Known limit: a contender who has faced few opponents keeps an approximate score, and the bottom of the table moves more than the podium.
